Erik Castello earned his PhD from the University of Padua, Italy, in 2007. He is associate professor at Padua University, Italy, where he has been teaching English language and linguistics since 2006. He has been the Erasmus coordinator of the exchange programmes with the University of Birmingham and Royal Holloway – London since 2015.
His current research interests include (learner) corpus linguistics, corpus pragmatics, discourse analysis and stylistics, and EFL language teaching and testing. He has recently examined aspects of written and spoken learner language, including the use of discourse markers and backchannels, that of it-extraposition constructions and of adjectives, with a view to applying the findings to language teaching and assessment. He has also explored aspects of the language of Charles Dickens’ “Pictures from Italy” and of Pope Francis’ “Laudato Si’”.
He has been involved in several (inter)national and local research projects, including: the Trinity Lancaster Corpus Early Access Data Grant: "Listener response in examiner-EFL examinee interactions" (2017-2019); “The sociopragmatics of written speech acts”, with Sara Gesuato (2018-2020); and LONGDALE (Longitudinal Database of Learner English) (2010-2016).
He has served as peer reviewer for the LCR (Learner Corpus Research) and for the AESLA (Asociación Española de Lingüística Aplicada) conferences since 2015, and for various (inter)national journals (e.g. “Journal of Language, Identity & Education”, “World Englishes”, “Nordic Journal of English Studies”, “RILA”, “Lingua e Linguaggi”).
He has participated in and contributed to several (inter-)national conferences and to the organization of scientific events. He was the principal organizer of the conference “Compiling and using learner corpora”, University of Padua, Italy (16-17 May 2013). He was co-organiser of the conference “Exploring and Assessing Pragmatic Aspects of L1 and L2 Communication”, University of Padua, Italy (25-27 July 2018), and of the XXIX AIA conference, University of Padua, Italy, (5-7 September 2019).
He was visiting lecturer at Cardiff University, UK (March-May 2016), Universität Bremen, Germany (December 2014), National Taiwan University, Taiwan (July 2013), Liaoning Normal University, China (August-September 2012), University of Melbourne, Australia (October 2011), Johannes Gutenberg-Universität, Mainz, Germany (May 2010).
He is member of the International Pragmatics Association (IprA) (2018-), of the Learner Corpus Linguistics Association (2014-), of the Italian Association of English Studies (AIA) (2007-) and of ESSE (European Society for the Study of English).

I suoi attuali interessi di ricerca includono la linguistica dei corpora, la learner corpus linguistics, l’analisi del discorso scritto e orale, il testing linguistico, la linguistica sistemico-funzionale e il linguaggio del turismo, la complessità testuale.

I lavori di tesi triennale possono riguardare: vari aspetti della grammatica e del lessico inglese; varietà dell'inglese; analisi di testi e corpora in lingua inglese e/o di versioni italiano/inglese; altri aspetti della linguistica inglese da concordare con il docente.

I lavori di tesi magistrali proposti riguardano principalmente gli interessi di ricerca del docente: la linguistica dei corpora; il linguaggio del turismo in prospettiva sincronica e diacronica; l’analisi del discorso; il testing linguistico; la linguistica sistemico-funzionale; la complessità testuale.
